About Us

Frustrated with the inflexibility of traditional schools, and concerned by the growing trend of home-schooling, Nicola Bastick and Helen Crook established Freedom Learning. With years of experience of domestic and overseas educational systems, as well as the demands of professional sport, they formed the perfect partnership to create an exceptional school for exceptional children.

Freedom delivers national curriculum education in very small classes in less time than is required in traditional schools. And what’s more, time away for events and competitions is both expected and catered for with the provision of additional lessons and distance learning using new media.

The Founders

Nicola Bastick
Mother of three, Nicola is a former Vice President of The Bank of Montreal. Alongside her city career she served as Chairperson on the St. Aubyn’s School PTA for many years, as well as running a successful Kumon business and tutoring mathematics. Her children are all keen athletes, and daughter Georgina, a top national tennis player, was one of Freedom’s first pupils.

Helen Crook
Helen gained a tennis scholarship to the prestigious University of South Carolina where she excelled both on the court and in the classroom. She earned All-American honours for her sporting achievements, graduated magna cum laude (first-class honours), and was nominated as a finalist in the NCAA National Woman of the Year competition. After a professional tennis career, including seven Wimbledon appearances and a British no.1 ranking, she established a not-for-profit company aiding British women’s tennis and is director of several successful companies.

The Teachers
Children with special skills are used to dedicated attention from coaches and teachers in their field. We believe that this ethos should extend to the classroom, and we've hand-picked our teaching staff with this principal in mind. Teachers are all university educated in their relevant disciplines, and since class sizes are limited to eight they develop less formal, more involved relationships with pupils. Freedom staff understand the demands on students and provide distance learning and extra lessons when they miss classes because of competitions and events.

The Students
Freedom Learning encourages diversity among its student body; however, all students share a common denominator: an aspiration off the academic pathway. That's not to say that our students are not academic; in fact, they are fully committed to their studies. The difference is that our students are also athletes, artists and musicians who are all pursuing dreams in their chosen arenas. Freedom School was designed to provide for their unique needs; and that's why they choose Freedom.

The Parents
Parents are integral to the development of their children in all aspects of life: especially if those children are pursuing sporting, musical, or artistic dreams. We have first-hand experience of those difficulties, which is why we founded Freedom Learning. At the core of what we do is the desire to ease the burdens on parents and children. We provide termly reports, welcome parental feedback, and we ensure the highest standards and most supportive methods of teaching. And we charge less too.
